Generally, the purpose of a firewall is to protect your computer (or network) against unauthenticated access from the 'outside' world. Firewall is a tight filter for all information coming to and going from your computer. Operating without a firewall is like leaving your car unlocked, with the engine running, and the keys in the ignition. Or like offering a stranger your wallet and encouraging him not to forget your social security card, driver's license, cash and credit cards. Locking a car, using a wheel lock or installing a security system makes stealing it more difficult.
