NGO in a Box - Security Edition

FIREWALLS TOOLS

Generally, the purpose of a firewall is to protect your computer (or network) against unauthenticated access from the 'outside' world. Firewall is a tight filter for all information coming to and going from your computer. Operating without a firewall is like leaving your car unlocked, with the engine running, and the keys in the ignition. Or like offering a stranger your wallet and encouraging him not to forget your social security card, driver's license, cash and credit cards. Locking a car, using a wheel lock or installing a security system makes stealing it more difficult. Internet security and privacy products provide adequate protection by making it difficult for 'outlaws' to take control of your computer.

If well configured, a firewall can help you keep intruders away. It can also provide summaries of information on kinds and amount of traffic that has passed through the computer and the number of attempts to break into it, etc.

- Zone Alarm
