How to Create a VS2Go Account

Installation Note: After installing and running VS2Go for the first time, you may receive update requests to ensure that you have the latest version of VS2Go. Please refer to section 2.3 About Updating VS2Go when this occurs.

Your VS2Go account includes an email address and login details for the system. You may register multiple accounts on the same computer. Each account will have its separate space and be protected from non-owner access.

Step 1. Click: source:VaultletSuite/screenshots-en/03.PNG or select Start > Programs > VaultletSuite2Go > VaultletSuite2Go to activate the VaultletSuite 2 Go main console and Welcome to VaultletSuite 2 Go window as follows:

The Choose which account creation path you wish to follow screen is discussed in detail in the following section.

2.1 How to Choose the Right VS2Go Account

VaultletSuite gives you the option of storing your account and login details on your computer or USB memory stick. Its purpose is to accommodate both users who always use the same computer and those who require access from different computers, without compromising their security.

Important: Please read the following option descriptions before deciding which is best suited to your needs.

  • The Simplicity. Fast and easy. For beginners option is for those who are satisfied with the default account registration options. You will be prompted for the fewest details. The account will be stored in the 'home' folder of your computer (for example - C:\Documents and Settings\User\vaultletsoft) and the private key will be stored on the VaultletSoft server.
  • The Control: Quick Start for your hard drive option will create an account with identical configuration process as the Simplicity option, but explains in more detail the installation and system access choices you are making.
  • The Control: Quick Start for Mobile Data (6 steps) option is designed for a speedy registration process and assumes that your email and files will be located on a USB memory stick. Choose this option if you want to carry your VS2Go account with you, and access it from different computers.
  • The Control: Hands on for Mobile Data (10 steps) is for users who want to read through all the possible options to select the account configuration that is right for them. You can also decide on the storage location for your private key as well.

Note: In this guide, we will demonstrate registration with the Hands on for Mobile Data (10 steps) option, with settings that will most likely apply to the majority of our users. For those wishing to choose other account creation paths, please read through the next section for the relevant steps.

Step 1. Check the account creation path best suited to your needs.

2.2 Account Registration Walkthrough

This section demonstrates how to register a VS2Go account, by using the Control: Hands on for Mobile Data (10 steps) account creation path.

First, generate your key pair. This will become the main security component of your account.

Step 1. Catch the coloured square on the screen with your mouse!

Figure 4: Warm up the key pair generator by trying to click on the jittery square screen

Step 2. Choose where you want to store the private key.

Note: Keep in mind that your private key is the only way to decrypt messages and files in your account. If you decide to store it locally (the Control option, see below) -- on your computer or a USB memory stick -- do not lose or damage this file. You cannot replace your private key once the original is lost or compromised. This option is for experienced users who feel confident that they can securely manage their private key. Should you want to store the private key on the VaultletSoft servers (the Simplicity option, see below) -- you will no longer have to worry about losing it or keeping a copy whenever accessing the account. You will place the responsibility on the VaultletSoft organisation to keep your key secure. Remember though that in this last scenario, you must create an exceptionally long passphrase to protect your secure key. For more information about public and private keys, please refer to Chapter 7: How to Keep Your Internet Communication Private in the How-to Booklet.

Step 3. Choose the Simplicity option

Step 5. Enter the information required in different text fields.

Your current email address will be used to reset your passphrase in the future or to send you important account notifications.

Note: Should you wish to increase the anonymity of your VS2Go account, consider registering with a fictitious name and not providing an alternate email address. Bear in mind, however, that if you do not set an alternate email address, you will not be able to reset your passphrase should you forget it in the future.

Your preferred account name should not contain any spaces and be unique. It will be used in your VS2Go email address. For example: terence.tester@vaultletsoft.com

Note: VS2Go offers you a secure method for entering the passphrase. It is done by using the virtual keyboard. This option can protect your passphrase from being compromised by a keylogger program that could be running on the computer.

Step 6. Click: source:VaultletSuite/screenshots-en/10.PNG to activate the Virtual Keyboard as follows:
